On a life raft in the Mediterranean, a teenager from Ghana wonders whether he will reach Europe alive, and whether he will be allowed to stay. In the North Atlantic, a young chef disappears from a cruise ship, leaving a mystery for his friends and family to solve.  A water-squatting community battles eviction from a harbour in British Columbia, raising the question of who owns the water.
The Imperilled Ocean by Laura Trethewey is a deeply reported work of narrative journalism that follows people as they head out to sea. What they discover holds inspiring and dire implications for the life of the ocean — and for all of us back on land. Battles are fought, fortunes made, lives lost, and the ocean approaches an uncertain future. Behind this human drama, the ocean is growing ever more unstable, threatening to upend life on land.

Amazing book

I have the perfect book for National literacy week! If you are interested in reading my review see below!

Hope Of The Wasteland is a sci-fi adventure novel for middle grade readers. This book was written by Matt Watts and published by Donovan Street Press.

This book follows our main character Huey as he goes against his days wishes, ( which is to stay in the bunker) where he is safe from the wasteland, but when his father doesn’t come back Huey must save his remaining family. Huey goes through his own adventures and finds a feisty girl to become his companion.

I absolutely loved this book and fell in love with Huey because of his courageous attitude and how he did not let his anxiety win. I liked how this book made Huey change. His character changed from being a small, timid and anxious character to a strong character in the end.

I liked how this book brought in nature and how the reader can try to make life better in the world.

Overall, I absolutely loved this book and really hope there will be more books to come in this series. I thought that it was really well put together and how I loved Huey from the first page. I think I will miss the characters immensely!

Imagining Anne

This book not only contains rich literature, but also is a work of art. I really enjoyed going through the pages, and stopping at beautiful sketches, whether it was dresses, flowers, or animals! When I was seven, I visited Prince Edward Island for the very first time with my family. It was a long road trip, and I vaguely remember my parents mentioning to me that this province is well known for a children’s book series called Anne of Green Gables. At first, I was not interested. Why would I rather read books that were way too hard for me to comprehend when I could be playing with toys or going on my bike outside?

My thinking quickly changed when we arrived. It was in the summer, and the weather was nice and warm, with the sun shining on my back. I fell in love with the province, despite that it was quite small, it was rewarding. I loved spending mornings at the beach where I could see red sand along with the heavy, gorgeous, ocean waves, splashing the ocean floor. Collecting seashells and other sorts of nature was super fun as well, and kept me entertained. Something that made my trip amazing was trying some of their specialties: their gigantic lobsters, mussels, clams, and delicious, sweet, blueberry pie, made of real blueberries!

But what I remember the most from the trip was visiting Anne’s home, Green Gables. Yes, I was able to go inside and take a look! It was as if I was transported right into her world! I enjoyed watching a short documentary of how Anne of Green Gables was created, and got to shop some items from her world! It was a difficult choice on what to get, but I ended up choosing an Anne Shirley doll! The original series had way more complicated words, so I didn’t read those until around the age of 10, but my parents did buy an easier illustrated book for me to read, in english and in french!

Throughout that trip, it inspired me to read about this character, Anne. What I really liked was being able to learn more about Prince Edward Island, as most of the places in the books are actually in real life! “Imagining Anne” gave me many answers, such as what some of these characters wore, how similar these characters are to L.M Montgomery, and why she decided to write this book.

If you are someone who loves art, Anne of Green Gables, or simply someone who is looking for something interesting to read, this book has got your back! Perhaps it will give you some inspiration ideas for your next project, because it sure did for me! Thank you for reading this book review, and I hope that through my experience you are able to learn something new!

Amazing book

Wow! All I can say is wow! Butter Tart Island by Hope Dalvay was published by Acorn press packed a powerful punch that I could not put down. This book features Jane, a twelve year old girl who moves to a little place in PEI named Fare Thee Well after playing a small game of relocation darts. Jane experiences a lot of not so lucky things and finds friends in unexpected places but when the truth comes out, what happens next shocks her.

This book features a lot of “oldies things” such as Y2K and the music from the eighties which I think is cool. The setting is very unique because the name Fare Thee Well is named after a quote from Shakespeare. I absolutely loved the unique characters in the book like Prunella and Zarlie!

I went into this book expecting a lot and this book definitely did not disappoint. I fell in love with the characters and loved getting to understand the characters more.

This book reminded me about a time when we had a lot of snow. Five years ago, Newfoundland experienced snowmagon, one of the biggest snow storms in the world.

Overall, this book made me laugh and cry and while I am sad to have finished it I know the message will stick around for a long time! This was a perfect book and I would recommend it to anyone. The message is to be kind!

All is Clam

“All is Clam” by Hilary MacLeod was one heck of a thriller! It wasn’t easy to fully engage with the book in the beginning, but finishing the book was totally worth it.

The story is set in The Shoes, a tiny coastal village where all the gossip begins and doesn’t take long to spread. Where everyone knows everyone, knows their houses by names, and where not a single secret is safe. More like not a single person is safe. The Wild Rose Cottage is the house where all murder incidents occur, and has never been lit up on Christmas day for years. It had been abandoned since who knows how long? Had the Sullivan’s family generation been cursed? Who were these new people living in the Wild Rose Cottage? Were they here to continue the murder legacy?

The novel takes you through different perspectives of the villagers, and a captivating journey of solving the murder mystery. Had it been an accident? Or a murder? Only God knew. I resonated with many of the characters and their ways of thinking and view of life.

Hilary MacLeod’s writing was very sentimental and captivating. It was unpredictable and when it shot bullets, it never missed. I love how throughout the novel, Hilary MacLeod would discuss very heavy topics within the storyline, which made my heart sink each time.

I recommend this book to whoever is looking for a good Christmas thriller, and is willing to bear the heaviness of thoughts in this book.

I recommend this book.
